Above the water's surface, grasshoppers and crickets stridulate that is, they rub one part of their body across another to produce 'those fiddling tunes so evocative of summer'.
These are no ordinary sounds, but the sounds of a hidden world an underwater world, where an orchestra of creatures create an extraordinary and vibrant music. Students can go to the teacher for help as he/she walks around the class observing and assisting students.For over a year, sound recordist Tom Lawrence has been capturing the sounds of Pollardstown Fen in Ireland. The student will also create a short detailed paragraph describing their animal. The students can use the book if needed and they can use other classroom resources to create their animal. After this the teacher can have the students pick one animal from the book and make a poster on it. The teacher can first use the book as a read aloud then discuss the book with the students and address any questions or concerns. A teacher can create striking lessons concerning fresh water habitats since the poetry in the book focuses primarily on a pond. Song of the Water Boatman is a great resource in a elementary school setting. A glossary is also present in the back of the book that briefly summarizes the information from the pages. In the beginning of the book Joyce has included a table of contents that have each animal from the pond that is throughly mapped out in their own unique section. In the text the author has many great poems that offer ample amounts of information to the reader.
Nature is truly deeply expressed through Joyce’s kin observations and marvelous illustrations. Joyce Sidman’s strongest element of in Song of the Water Boatman is certainly the kin observations that Joyce has made on one simple pond. Aside of each poem there is also notes on the side of the page for parents and teachers to enjoy. Every stroke is easily drawn to make the pictures appear three dimensional.
These poems go along fabulously with strikingly vivd illustrations that are yet so soft and so quite. Each poem involves some type of emotion, some of love, kindness, friendship, and even humorous.There are eleven poems that focus primarily on a simple yet beautiful pong. All types of emotions are present in this poetry book. The words are complex and the sentences are not so simple.
