His young, squeaky, and innocent voice didn't vibe with the often dark and always debaucherous tales. (Go ahead, listen to the sample.) Because of this, I could never really get completely immersed in the book. It was like listening to a 17 year old high school junior reading Anthony Kiedis. First, let me say, I think the narrator is - while not terrible - certainly not worthy and didn't make me feel like I was listening to the words of Anthony Kiedis.

(Though I adore Flea.) So, I finally downloaded Scar Tissue. Full disclosure: I've been putting it off for 2 years because I haven't really liked the RHCP since Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Rock biographies are my favorite genre so, eventually, I had to read Scar Tissue. Scar Tissue is a fascinating account of a fast-lane life, addiction, and a moving story of eventual recovery and redemption. Even his descent into drug addiction was a part of that journey another element that he has transformed into art. Kiedis is a man "in love with everything" - the darkness, the death, the disease. In his telling, we can see everything he has done has been part of a passionate journey. Now, in Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis defies the rock star clichés. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are that rare breed of rock band: critically lauded and popularly embraced by millions of fans, their albums consistently sell into the stratosphere - their CD Californication sold over 13 million copies alone.

In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside.

It is instead a compelling story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption. As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. SCAR TISSUE far transcends the typical rock biography, because Anthony Kiedis is anything but a typical rock star. But there's a price to pay for both success and excess and in SCAR TISSUE, Kiedis writes candidly of the overdose death of his soul mate and band mate, Hillel Slovak, and his own ongoing struggle with an addiction to drugs. Crisscrossing the country, the Chili Peppers were musical innovators and influenced a whole generation of musicians. He formed the band with three schoolfriends - and found his life's purpose. and plunged headfirst into the demimonde of the L.A. After a brief child-acting career, Kiedis dropped out of U.C.L.A. Raised in the Midwest, he moved to LA aged eleven to live with his father Blackie, purveyor of pills, pot, and cocaine to the Hollywood elite. In SCAR TISSUE Anthony Kiedis, charismatic and highly articulate frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, recounts his remarkable life story, and the history of the band itself.
